There is a lot of fossilized coral near where Moscow Puzzles practice. The quarries, reservoirs, and rivers are lined with limestone that takes shapes that might as well be alien; there are not any oceans for a thousand miles in any direction. There are not many bandmates floating around, either. That is why Moscow Puzzles sound like they do. Formed by a drummer and guitarist – neither who could sing and who couldn’t find anyone else to play with at first – the band became more like a logic puzzle to solve: how the hell do you make an instrumental guitar and drum duo interesting?

Rehearsing, writing, and recording in a cellar embedded in that same fossil-rich river basin, Moscow Puzzles are, first and foremost, a live act. They aren’t interested in overdubs or backing tracks and lean into their limitations. Using a basic loop pedal as their work-around, most of the songs on this tape take a simple short phrase and let it drift as the band shifts and modulates around it.

Just like their local Mississippi Alluvial plain, Moscow Puzzles take something mundane, like drums, guitars, or limestone, and let time erode it into something unique and slightly alien. Drift on...
